Once again, Colegio Internacional J.H. Newman has been recognised in the press as one of the schools with the best results in the PAU university entrance exams. On this occasion, the newspaper El Mundo has reported on it.

We are sincerely grateful for this recognition and proud of these results. However, we would like to remember that this figure, while valuable, does not by itself define the meaning or scope of our educational proposal. Rather, it is the consequence of everything that takes place day by day at the school: our educational model and, above all, our main objective, which is to accompany each student in their integral human growth.

We believe that a grade should not be the only criterion for measuring educational success, but rather the reflection of an authentic, profound and meaningful formative experience.

It is also important to highlight that at Colegio Newman we do not train students for the PAU; we prepare our students to open themselves up to the world, to grow as people, to develop their freedom and responsibility, and to become true protagonists of their future.

These recent figures show the positive and continually improving progress the school is experiencing. This is very significant news which acts as objective recognition of the work we have done at the school for 20 years and that shows that our educational proposal obtained suitable and optimal results. The news that we are ranked among the 16 schools with higher marks in Madrid, can be further enhanced by noting that we are also one of the schools with the highest percentage of students taking the Spanish university entrance exam (EvAU), with a 100% pass rate and 96-98% of our students sitting the exam.

However, we emphasise that the dignity and the strength of Newman School’s proposal cannot be reduced to university entrance ranking. To do so would be to dimish its true greatness which goes far beyond this: enabling each student to realise their abilities and talents, to grow and develop as a human being, to understand the value of their own life, to explore different fields of knowledge, and to remain open to caring for the world and for the common good. This human journey is far richer and larger than a fact, or university entrance ranking can express.

For all these reasons, we are grateful to see the fruits of this educational journey that we have been following for more than 20 years. A fruit that is also reflected in the very high number of families who, once again this academic year, have placed their trust in Colegio Newman as the place for their children’s education in this latest admissions process.

Without a doubt, this is a shared achievement: by the teaching staff, the students and the entire educational community.

I was a student at J. H. Newman for 12 years. I am currently a freelance translator and interpreter, and I am very grateful to the school for the education I received. The importance given to languages (English and Italian) has been very valuable for my professional development, where English is no longer a plus but a must. Educational Principles

At J.H. Newman International School, we understand education through the two Latin roots traditionally associated with the word.
Educare means to nurture, teach, and help a person grow. Educere means to draw out what is already within them and help it emerge.
Education, therefore, is not simply a matter of filling an empty container from the outside. It requires respect for the person before us, an understanding that growth takes time, and the conviction that each student must ultimately be able to engage with reality and act independently.
Our educational project rests on three fundamental principles.

1. Education as an introduction to reality as a whole

The purpose of any true education is to know reality. Reality sets the educational process in motion because it challenges us, awakens curiosity, and stirs the desire to understand. It also remains the point of reference throughout the educational journey. What students learn must be tested against reality until they come to understand it and make that understanding their own.

2. A view of reality that must be examined critically

We come to know and love reality when we discover and affirm its meaning. In every area of life, any explanation of reality must first be understood honestly and in full. Only then can it be examined personally and accepted freely. This critical process is essential and requires a sound basis for judging and comparing each proposal.

3. The adult as a point of reference

We seek to foster a personal relationship between teacher and student, based on genuine communication and openness.
Within this relationship, students are encouraged to exercise their freedom, discover the reasons behind what they are offered, and recognize its value. A teacher’s authority lies in the ability to explain and justify the understanding of reality they present.

What does Colegio Newman aim to achieve through its educational project?

At Colegio Newman, a state-funded school in Madrid, our primary aim is for each student to grow in every dimension: intellectually, by learning to express themselves clearly and reason soundly; emotionally, by developing a freedom drawn to goodness and beauty; and critically, by learning to judge and appreciate reality.

What kind of complementary initiatives are part of school life?

We offer a wide range of extracurricular activities (sports, sciences, arts) as well as projects and activities within school hours. We encourage artistic creation and an appreciation for work done with care. We have theatre during school hours, an introduction to design, exhibitions, cultural weeks and musical projects such as the choir. In keeping with our openness to the world, we also promote social activities, personal entrepreneurship projects, a university fair, sport and physical activity.

How are languages worked on day to day?

Colegio Newman is a bilingual school where we offer an oral and written immersive approach, supported by everyday activities that allow students to use the language naturally and in real contexts, as well as through culture and history. The school is also a Cambridge examination centre for Secondary students, who can earn qualifications such as B2 (First) and C1 (Advanced).

What kind of international experiences does the school offer?

At Colegio Newman, an international school in Madrid, we have an international relations programme that offers stays and trips of different lengths at schools in other countries (for example Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States). We also promote Erasmus+ projects and maintain a network of collaboration with schools in different places.

What is the Baccalaureate like at Newman?

Newman Baccalaureate in Madrid is designed to educate students with a critical, humane, and socially responsible outlook. We offer pathways in Science and Technology, Social Sciences and Humanities, and the Arts.
